Medieval 12th Century Carcassonne City
Carcassonne City a magnificent medieval fortress the largest intact fortified French citadel in Europe. Jewel of the Aude a UNESCO World Heritage site, 52 towers and 3km of ramparts. Accessable from the Holiday Accommodation. Amazing aerial views as you fly into Salvaza airport. By auto route Carcassonne stands proud and dominant on the skyline.
Built near the Western Mediterranean sea in the South of France at the turn of the 12th Century by the Viscounts of Trencavel. Carcassonne is named after Lady Carcass who sounded (sonne) the trumpets to warn of Charlemagne's invading enemy. Her sculptures proudly stand at the city entrance.
Cathar Castle
All of the Cathar Castles are within easy access from the Holiday Accommodation. Queribus, Aguilar, Termes, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens castle were built to defend this fabulous Chateau and are called the 'five sons of Carcassonne'
Museum and shops
Entry to Carcassonne Castle is free. You'll be astonished to know that it was saved from demolition. This is credited to Jean Pierre Cros-Meyrevieille without whom we would not be able to enjoy this outstanding Chateau. Visit Carcassonne Museum or take a guided tour of the inner walls and discover the history of centuries past.
The Carousel at the city entrance adds to the occasion and is enjoyed by adults and children too. Horse carriage rides and road train are also fun.
Today over 50 restaurants lie inside Carcassonne's walls offering the famous Cassoulet and other gourmet delights. Pavement cafés and bars invite tourists from all over the world. Fun dungeons, shops selling antiques, tapestries, ice cream, sweets and gifts . Toy shops selling swords, helmets and crowns enable children to become a Princess or Knight for the day.
Well worth a visit at night the floodlit fortifications add to the atmosphere. Special medieval events are held throughout the year and on 'Bastille Day' July 14th a spectacular firework display illuminates the sky. Used in the film "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves" a fairytale place in South France.
