Axat A lively town on the river Aude. An ideal Summer holiday water
sports location with rock climbing in the gorge. Superbly placed for
Pyrenees Winter Ski Holidays A touristic train runs from opposite our
Gites through the Pyrenees to Perpignan. Only a stroll from the gite to an
outdoor heated pool with toboggan.
Rennes les Bains A Roman Thermal Health Spa town. Locals and holiday
makers shower and bathe in 'Le Bain Doux' the natural hot spring at the
river. Excellent restaurants and bars. Lively square providing musical
evening entertainment. Picturesque walks along the river Sals which runs
through the town centre. Book shops, Art Galleries and open air swimming
pool. Our studio Apartment is on the ground floor of the Spa complex.
Carcassonne UNESCO World heritage site. Magnificent fortified
Cathare city with a fairy tale castle steeped in history. 52 towers the city
has restaurants, shops, cafés,bars and 3km of ramparts. Well worth a visit

Esperaza Hat Museum. Esperaza Dinosaur Museum (Eva the Dinosaur is
exhibited from bones found at a nearby excavation site in Campagne Sur

Alet Les Bains Thermal Spa Town. Nostradamus lived near the ruined
abbey. Local water is bottled at source. Outdoor swimming pool 22°c.
Accro Parc supervised tree climbing for all ages and climbing abilities,

Limoux Known for the longest running carnival in the world during
January - March. Dating back to the 17th century "Fecos" waving
reedstalks called "carabenes" parade through the town in colourful
costumes. Visit the Piano and Animated Museum. A vibrant town with
plenty of restaurants and coffee bars in the Place de la Republique. Visit
one of the best open air fresh produce markets of the region on a Friday.
Try the savoury Pebradous biscuit. Sample the famous Blanquette and
Cremant which pre-dates Champagne. Discovered in 1531 by the monks of
St Hilaire.
Campagne Sur Aude Walk where dinosaurs once walked by visiting the
excavation site. In 1982 two teachers discovered dinosaur bones here.
Some are more than 72 million years old. The site is available for anyone
to dig for bones and fossilised dinosaur eggs subject to prior arrangement
with the Esperaza museum.
Couiza Nearest town to our Villa and Apartment with a local store,
boulangerie, cafés, bars, restaurants and river swimming. A local
chocolate factory is close by where you can buy delicious truffles, nougat
and pralines.
Mirepoix Medieval town built in the 11th Century on the right bank of the
river Hers. Flooded in 1289 it was rebuilt on the left bank on stilts.
Besieged in 1209 by Simon de Montfort after Cathars met here in 1206.
Perpignan 45 minutees from the Gites at Axat. Capital of the Pyrenees
Orientals at the crossroads of Spain and Andorra. A border city one side
on the Mediterranean coast the other side has the highest mountains of the
French Pyrenees.

which clings to the vertical rock face. The Aguzou caves still in their
natural state have crystal and argonite formations.
