Rennes le Chateau Perched high on a hilltop with fabulous views of the Pyrenees, this tiny
village is a tourist magnet to the mystery surrounding the events of local priest Beringer
Sauniere's amassed wealth. Along with his housekeeper Marie Denarnaud they managed to
restore the local church, neo-gothic tower Magdala, an orangery and park. Also numerous
plots of land were bought in Marie Denarnaud's name.

Many stories and assumptions have been made about Rennes le Chateau and its said there are
twelve treasures to be found in the area surrounding Pech Cardou directly opposite our Villa
accommodation in Serres. Links to Pyrene and Greek civilisation emerge beneath the tale.

Even today you can imagine how unhurried life was. Beautiful scenery and weather
compliment this amazing village. Today it still keeps its charm. Wander in the bookshops.
Browse literature of past events. Or dine at L' Amarante or the Tabel de la Abbe  two first

intriguing place. Visit the  Sauniere museum, church or guess the smell of the wine bottles a
great place to spend the day.

The mystery began in 1781 when Dame d'Hautpoul de Blanchefort entrusted her family
secret to her confessor Antoine Bigou Curé of Rennes le Chateau. Promising in turn to pass it
on to someone worthy enough to receive it. In 1789 during the French revolution he hid
documents in a Visigoth pillar inside the church. In 1791 he had a stone slab engraved with
Latin inscriptions. The coded message intrigue even to this day.

In 1792 he escaped to Sabadell in Spain where he died 18 months later. He passed the
secret onto Cauneille  who also told Jean Vie vicar of Rennes les Bains from 1840-1872  and
Cayron. The latter was tutor to Boudet a poor boy from Quillan who later became Curé of
Rennes les Bains and is buried in Axat.

Beranger Sauniere  a native of Montazels near Couiza became priest of Rennes le Chateau.
He became  friends  with Boudet and together they set about looking for the secret.
Together with Marie Denarnaud their lives changed and great fortune was amassed.

Many books have been written about the area The Da Vinci Code & The Holy Blood the Holy
Grail. Paintings such as Poussin's Shepherds of Arcadia and Tenier the younger's Temptation
of Saint Anthony are said to reveal codes. Sacred geometry aligning the churches of
Peyrolles and Serres link to Mount Pech Cardou. Our accommodation near Rennes le Chateau,
